The EMIA Scheme from the dtic
The Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) scheme is a government incentive designed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) to help South African businesses partially offset the costs of developing international markets.
It provides qualifying businesses with cost-reimbursable grants for exhibitions, market research, and inward or outward buying and selling missions.
The dtic administers the EMIA scheme through a series of key support offerings:
* Individual Exhibitions & Promotions: Partially compensates exporters for costs associated with showcasing their products at recognised international exhibitions and retail stores.
* National Pavilions: Organises group stands at leading international trade fairs to showcase local products with the backing of a targeted marketing process.
* Primary Market Research: Covers qualifying expenses incurred while researching and defining new international markets.
* Foreign Market Patent & Product Registration: Offsets the financial burden of registering international patents, quality marks, and product trademarks.
* Outward Selling Missions: Funds trips for local businesses to meet with potential foreign buyers and close export orders.Inward Buying Missions: Assists South African entities with the costs of hosting prospective foreign buyers and investors locally to conclude export orders.

How to Apply for the MIA Scheme from the dtic
Exporters must apply for the Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) scheme exclusively through the Online Incentive Solution (OIS) platform.
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) no longer accepts emailed, faxed, or hand-delivered applications.
The Process
* Register an account on the the dtic Online Incentive Solution.
* Complete the EMIA Individual Participation application form online.
* Attach all mandatory supporting documents.
* Submit the complete application prior to commencing your export activity.
Mandatory Supporting Documents
You will need to scan and attach the following documents to your online application:
* Valid Tax Compliance Pin: Obtained from the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
* SARS Exporter/Importer Certificate: Required for manufacturers and physical goods traders.
* Company Documents: Certificate of Incorporation (Company/CC), Trust statement, or partnership agreement.
* Identity/Passport: Certified SA ID copy (or passport for international travel).
* Valid Passport: Must be provided for any planned international travel.
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for EMIA assistance, your enterprise must fall into one of the following categories:
* South African manufacturers and exporters.
* South African export trading houses (representing at least three SMMEs or Historical Disadvantaged Individuals).
* South African commission agents (representing at least three SMMEs or HDI businesses).
* South African export councils or industry associations (representing at least five entities).
